Seattle Shakespeare Company's productions are part of Shakespeare in American Communities: Shakespeare for a New Generation, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
SHAKESPEARE’S FOOLS is a five-day winter break camp for
students ages 8 to 16 presented by Seattle Shakespeare Company and
the ZinZanni Institute for Circus Art in Teatro ZinZanni’s antique
Belgian spiegeltent.
Through a series of workshops with local artists from the Shakespeare
Company and members of the international cast of Teatro ZinZanni,
thirty-five campers will learn the basics of clowning in the context
of Shakespeare’s characters and plays. The campers will explore
movement, timing and comedy through slapstick, clowning,
acrobatics, circus skills and stage combat. They will then apply their
skills to scenes and monologues of Shakespeare’s great clowns.
Working individually and in teams, the campers will spend part of
each day learning the physicality of comedy and clowning and some
circus skills. They will also work on character development, scene
study, and Shakespeare’s text and how it can inform clowning acting
choices. Each day builds upon the previous day’s work to arrive at
fully realized characters and scenes by the conclusion of the camp.
The week culminates in a showcase-style performance by the campers
for family and friends in the spiegeltent.
Ages 8 to 16
Tuition is $350 per camper.
