All-women weekend Shakespeare Master Class

A master workshop for working professional actresses Jan 6-8, 2012
 

During this weekend intensive you will explore practical, helpful tools for playing Shakespeare with more intellectual clarity, focused inquiry and greater persuasive argument, while heightening authentic presence and deepening physical and emotional connection. Detailed text analysis including structure of the verse and elements of rhetoric, Folio clues and Elizabethan Cosmology will be combined with work on personalization, characterization, and the actor-audience relationship. The class will include one-on-one, hands-on work with each participant, as well as group exercises designed to increase ensemble awareness, and promote the actor’s physical, vocal, emotional, and intellectual responsiveness. Each participant will also have an opportunity to explore a Shakespearean character of the opposite sex in a three-hour session on gender-crossing for the stage. Come ready to be challenged!

Dates: Friday, January 6-Sunday January 8.
Times: Friday, January 6th; 7-10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday; 12-5 p.m.
Location: Intiman Rehearsal Studio
Class size: 14 maximum

Costs: $275 (cash or check). A $150 deposit insures your place. The remaining $125 balance is due first day of workshop.

Please note: Cancellations prior to December 19th will receive a full refund of their deposit. After the 19th, no refund will be made. This is an attempt, over the Holiday season, to maintain the integrity of our numbers to ensure a fully-attended workshop.

Come Prepared:

Bring a monologue (under 2 minutes) that you are passionate about speaking, preferably one you haven't worked on, and 10 lines of Shakespeare from the opposite gender that you wish to explore. Please dress in layers, bring a yoga mat or towel for floor work, be prepared to move, and bring water to drink.

About Lisa Wolpe:

Lisa Wolpe is a prolific actress, director, teacher, playwright and producer, and is Producing Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company, which she founded in 1993. LAWSC was named by LA Magazine as “one of the ten coolest things to do in Los Angeles”, and was featured on PBS, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS News. LAWSC's next full production will be Hamlet, starring Lisa in the title role, and two-time Obie winner and Tony nominee Charlayne Woodard as Gertrude.

Lisa has directed more than fifty productions, and has performed more than twenty leading Shakespearean roles. Current projects include her one-woman show Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender, which was commissioned by the Provincetown Theater Festival last year, and will be touring internationally in 2013. Other credits: Berkeley Rep, Shakespeare & Co., Boston Center for the Arts, Arizona Theater Co., San Diego Rep, Boston Theater Works, California Shakespeare Festival, Southwest Shakespeare.

Lisa is thrilled to be joining the acting company for the 2012 Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she will be playing Jason in Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella, directed by Bill Rauch and Tracy Young, and Pauline in The Seagull, directed by Libby Appel.
